At Designer Doors, we believe that a superior finish is essential if doors are to maintain their value and look beautiful for many years to come.

Finishing the door accomplishes three things: it allows the wood to repel moisture, protects against UV damage, and allows the wood to “breathe,” eliminating moisture.

For stained garage doors, we strongly recommend Sikkens Cetol® 1-2-3. This is a premium translucent alkyd with iron oxide pigments and ultraviolet absorbers, and offers excellent protection from moisture and ultraviolet rays. Available in 8 colors, and 2 clear finishes.

For painted garage doors, we recommend a high solids acrylic primer followed by two coats of high quality exterior latex paint.

Doors should be finished prior to installation, and all six surfaces should be coated, including the top and bottom, ends, interior and exterior.

Recoating should be done every 2–3 years, per the coating manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines, to prolong the life of the door over many years.
